Greetings from Cleveland – your 2012 destination city,
Yes, the Triennial conference is still a year away or only a year away depending on your involvement. We here in Cleveland are beginning to feel as if it is “just around the corner.”
The steering committee reminds you that your proposals for workshops are due in October of 2011. The strength of our break-out sessions relies on your interests and presentations . Diane Stupay and Ellen Bishko eagerly await your proposals. As soon as possible, send along a hard copy to them at VCAM, The Cleveland Museum of Art, 11150 East Boulevard, Cleveland, OH 44106.
Some of you have asked about the schedule of events in order to plan ahead. I am pleased to share with you highlights of our conference. Obviously, this is subject to minor changes over the next year.
Monday, October 8:
Arrivals from distant locations, hotel registration, VCAM Board dinner
Tuesday, October 9:
9:30-11:30AM – VCAM Board Meeting
Arrivals all day at hotel THE INTERCONTINENTAL HOTEL – CLEVELAND CLINIC
11:00AM – 4:00PM – Optional tours such as:
- a 2-1/2 hour Tour of Cleveland,
- a Walking Tour of University Circle and its museums/ institutions
- historic Lakeview Cemetery including Wade Chapel (100% Louis Comfort Tiffany interior) and the President James A. Garfield Memorial Monument
- the Cleveland Clinic Art Collection
5:00-7:00PM – Opening Reception at Severance Hall – home of the world-famous Cleveland Orchestra with tours of the performance hall
Wednesday, October 10:
9:30-11:00AM – Opening Session with remarks from David Franklin, the director of CMA, and the featured speaker Susan Stamberg of NPR
11:15AM-12:15PM – break-out sessions
12:30-1:30PM – lunch
1:45-2:45PM – breakout sessions
3:00PM – tours of CMA (self guided and/or docent led)
6:15 -9:15PM – Private dinners
Thursday, October 11:
9:30-10:45AM – break-out sessions
11:00AM-12:15PM – break-out sessions
12:30-1:45PM – lunch with speaker about the renovation/additions to CMA
2:00PM – tours of CMA (self guided and/or docent led)
4:00PM – return to hotel
6:00-7:00PM – social hour at Hotel

Friday, October 12: 8:00AM – VCAM Board Meeting and departures
While more detailed information will appear in the registration booklet that will be sent to you after the first of the year 2012, you should have a fairly clear idea of the special
things we have been planning.

The hotel brings together plush guest rooms and suites, fine dining, comfort amenities, state-of-the-art conference facilities, and a dedicated talented staff. The sophisticated hotel offers 299 elegantly appointed non-smoking guest rooms, including 23 suites, 2 lounges, 24-hour in room dining, 24-hour fitness centre and tech savvy conference and meeting facilities.
Dining can be elegant or casual.
TABLE 45 RESTAURANT AND BAR
Table 45, brought to you by local Chef/Restaurateur Zack Bruell, offers cutting edge contemporary dining with an emphasis on "World Cuisine". This cross-cultural blend of cooking techniques combines various styles, cultures and ingredients. Location: In Hotel – Located on the ground floor adjacent to the hotel lobby. Services: Lunch | Dinner
NORTH COAST CAFE
The upbeat mood in the North Coast Café is a great way to start the morning or refuel in the middle of a busy day. If you can’t decide what to order from the casual dining menu, you can sample the international buffet and carving station which change daily.
Location: In Hotel – Located on the ground floor adjacent to the hotel lobby. Services: Breakfast | Lunch
The InterContinental Cleveland is just miles from downtown Cleveland and the following downtown attractions: Cleveland Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Great Lakes Science Centre, Playhouse Square, Quicken Loans Arena and Progressive Field.
Even closer is University Circle – home to The Cleveland Museum of Art, Severance Hall (home of The Cleveland Orchestra), The Cleveland Museum of Natural History, The Cleveland Botanical Garden, Western Reserve Historical Society, Cleveland Institute of Art, Cleveland Institute of Music, Case Western Reserve University, and Lake View Cemetery.
Rooms are held for VCAM registrants at a rate of $139 per double with breakfast for two included. Reservations may be made after November 15, 2011.

Registration
The conference registration fee will be $375 per participant. This fee includes the Opening Reception, the program at CMA for two days, private dinners and the Farewell Dinner. Of course, the transportation provided between the hotel and the museum and to the private dinners will be covered as well.
As we continue to finalize our plans, we suggest that you give serious thought to joining us, participating in the workshops, and experiencing a Cleveland that will surprise and
impress you. May we also suggest that you bring others with you who can experience the city even if not attending the conference. A side note: I just entertained house guests from Colorado who had never been here before, but have traveled the world. Their reaction, “We had no idea that Cleveland is such a cultural mecca with fine architecture and vibrant neighborhoods. We will gladly spread the word.”
I sincerely hope that this letter provides you with enough decision-making information to SAVE THE DATE and to start looking for airfares to Cleveland. We are a hub for Continental/United and are also served by American, Delta, and Southwest. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Greetings from the VCAM Triennial Workshops Committee!We are gearing up for the Triennial conference here in Cleveland, Ohio at The Cleveland Museum of Art October 9-12, 2012. Cleveland has much to offer the visitor, and we want the conference to offer the museum volunteer an exceptional experience as well. Please download the VCAM Workshop Proposal form PDF for the Cleveland Triennial with the theme of Valuing the Volunteer. Also attached this cover letter is available as a PDF. You may submit more than one proposal, but each proposal must be on a separate form. Acceptance notices will be sent out by November 15, 2011. You may submit your proposals as hard copy or as an email attachment, sending to: vcam@clevelandart.org Finally your Museum must be a member of VCAM for participation in the workshops.
